Description

The asymmetry index (AI) can be used to quantify the differences between measurements of an object on the left side versus its mirror image on the right side.


 

Measurements should be taken multiple times on each side with a reliable instrument to minimize measurment artifact.

 

asymmetry index =

= ABSOLUTE((left side measurement) - (right side measurement)) / MINIMUM(left side measurment, right side measuremnt)) * 100

 

This is equivalent to:

 

= (((larger of the two measurements) / (smaller of the two measurements)) - 1) * 100

 

Interpretation:

• An asymmetry index of 0 indicates symmetry.

• The larger the index the greater the asymmetry.
