Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) involves a number of phenotypes. One group has an asthenic body habitus which may show an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.
This group shows a Marfanoid body type:
(1) thin with slender build
(2) low body mass index (BMI)
(3) arm span greater than height
Schutte et al developed a discriminant equation:
Z = (98.6 * (anteroposterior chest diameter) / (height)) - (27.3 * (arm span) / (height)) + 17.511
where:
• Chest diameter, arm span and height are in the same units (cm, inches).
A score < 0 is associated with MVP.
