Description

Steroids such as dexamethasone can have a beneficial effect in infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.


 

Therapy was with dexamethasone with a starting dose of >= 0.3 mg/kg per day for at least 5 days duration during the first 60 days of life.

 

Criteria for a positive response to steroids:

(1) decline in FIO2 >= 0.20, AND

(2) decrease in ventilator rate by >=50% by the seventh day after initiation of therapy

 

Sustained response: If positive response persisted until the date when steroids were discontinued.

 

Transient response: If the positive response did not persist until the date when steroids were discontinued.
