An adult should consider weight loss if certain conditions are present. NIH uses the ACT (Assessment, Classification, Treatment) algorithm.
Parameters:
(1) body mass index (BMI) in kilograms per square meter
(2) waist circumference (at iliac crest)
(3) sex
(4) risk factors (see below)
(5) desire to lose weight
Indications for weight loss in an adult who wants to lose weight - one of the following:
(1) body mass index >= 30 kg per square meter
(2) >= 2 risk factors and one of the following:
(2a) BMI 25 to 29.9 kg per square meter
(2b) waist circumference > 88 cm (35 inches) in female
(2c) waist circumference > 102 cm (40 inches) in male
Risk factors:
(1) established coronary artery disease
(2) other atherosclerotic disease
(3) type 2 diabetes or impaired fasting glucose
(4) sleep apnea
(5) other obesity-associated diseases
(6) smoking
(7) hypertension
(8) high LDL cholesterol
(9) low HDL cholesterol
(10) family history of premature coronary artery disease
(11) age >= 45 years for male or >= 55 years for female
