A barrage is massed artillery fire from one or more guns that is designed to meet a goal.

(3) shell selection

Goal:

(1) destructive or suppressive

(1a) pinpoint vs area bombardment

(1b) other artillery = counterbattery

(2) supporting a troop assault

(2a) lifting (stops)

(2b) creeping/rolling/moving (increasing in distance)

(3) defensive

(3a) box, static, standing

 

Shells may be:

(1) high explosive

(2) armor piercing/penetrating

(3) antipersonnel

(4) mixed (cluster)

 

The shell fuse determines if the shell explodes:

(1) on impact

(2) proximity

(3) airburst
