The arteriovenous ratio provides useful information about an arteriovenous fistula created for hemodialysis. The authors are from Anglia Ruskin University, Broomfield Hospital and Ipswich Hospital in England.
Patient selection: autologous arteriovenous fistula
Outcome: functional maturity of the fistula
Parameters:
(1) diameter of the artery providing inflow in mm
(2) diameter of the vein providing outflow in mm
arteriovenous ratio = AVR =
= (diameter of artery providing inflow in mm) / (diameter of vein providing outflow in mm)
Interpretation:
• An AVR of 1 indicates no mismatch between the artery and vein.
• An AVR > 0.8 is associated with a > 80% chance of functional maturity.
• An AVR of 1.06 (between 1.0 and 1.1) indicates functional maturity of the fistula.
