Description

A patient with an arteriovenous shunt used for hemodialysis may develop a dermatitis in the overlying and adjacent skin.


 

Potential causes of a dermatitis at an arteriovenous shunt used for hemodialysis:

(1) statis dermatitis with or without ulceration

(2) eczema

(3) pseudo-Kaposi sarcoma (acroangiodermatitis)

(4) latex allergy

(5) other contact allergy (to tape, to skin decontaminant, to shunt material, etc)

(6) fungal infection

(7) bacterial infection
