Description

Apple Peel Syndrome is a rare disorder primarily affected the small bowel.


Synonyms: Christmas tree deformity, maypole deformity

 

Suspected pathogenesis: vascular compromise in the distribution of the superior mesenteric artery. Some cases have been linked to cystic fibrosis.

 

Features:

(1) atresia of the jejunum with or without duodenal atresia, resulting in shortening of the small bowel

(2) the remaining ileum is wrapped around a central axis that contains a thin branch of the ileocolic artery

(3) residual duodenum is dilated due to the obstruction

 

The appearance of the remaining small bowel is compared to the appearance of tinsel or garland wrapped around a Christmas tree.

 

Rarely the condition may be:

(1) familial

(2) associated with gut malrotation
