Description

Small diverticuli can occur in the appendix.

The presence of a diverticulum is often an incidental finding and may be visualized on imaging studies of the cecum.

A diverticulum may be congenital ("true") or acquired ("false", "pseudo"). The acquired form can occur in the presence of an appendiceal tumor or with obstruction. The true diverticulum has a muscularis propria while the pseudodiverticulum does not.

Diverticulitis can occur with or without perforation. The patient will have signs and symptoms of appendicitis but the appendix may not appear to be enlarged.
