Description

The APACHE II score provides prognostic information for a patient with paraquat poisoning. One advantage is that it does not depend on the plasma paraquat concentration.

Patient selection: paraquat ingestion

Assessment: APACHE II score, calculated at 24 hours after admission using data from the first 24 hours

The higher the APACHE II the greater the risk of mortality.

Different cutoffs have been used, with different sensitivity and specificity:

(1) > 20: 100% in-hospital mortality

(2) > 13: sensitivity 0.67, specificity 0.94

(3) >=10: sensitivity 0.88, specificity 0.84

(4) < 5: appears to be low risk
