Description

The Aortic Pulsatility Index (API) is a hemodynamic measurement that incorporates both cardiac filling pressures and contractility.

Parameters:

(1) systolic blood pressure in mm Hg

(2) diastolic blood pressure in mm Hg

(3) pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) in mm Hg (normally 2-15 mm Hg)

aortic pulsatility index =

= ((systolic blood pressure) - (diastolic blood pressure)) / (PCWP)

Interpretation:

For a patient with congestive heart failure, an API < 2.9 was associated with the increased risk for the 6-month risk of death, heart transplant or left ventricular assist device.
