Mwangome et al evaluated young infants for malnutrition. They identified mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and weight-for-age z score (WAZ) as better markers of malnutrition than weight-for-length z score (WLZ). The authors are from Kenya Medical Research Institute, CHAIN Network Nairobi, Swansea University and University of Oxford.
Patient selection: young infants in Kenya, from 1 to 6 months of age
Measures of malnutrition:
(1) mid-upper arm circumference < 11.0 cm
(2) weight-for-age z-score < -2
Outcomes:
(1) inpatient mortality
(2) post-discharge mortality up to 1 year after hospitalization
Areas for the ROC curves:
(1) MUAC: 0.67 to 0.70 in different clinical groups
(2) WAZ: 0.73
