Description

Drums made from contaminated animal hides can result in transmission of anthrax.


The risk is associated with untreated animal hides (goat, other) from a country where anthrax is endemic.

 

Release of spores can result in environmental contamination which can be widespread and persistent.

 

People at risk:

(1) drum makers

(2) drummers

(3) family members or co-residents

 

The risk of infection is greater for patients with an underlying comorbid condition affecting host defenses.

 

Types of anthrax reported:

(1) cutaneous

(2) inhalation

(3) gastrointestinal
