Description

The anophthalmic socket syndrome (ASS) is a condition that follows enucleation of the eye. It can impact the patient's cosmetic appearance and quality of life.


Clinical features:

(1) status post removal of the ocular globe with or without adjacent tissues

(2) depression of the superior sulcus (sunken upper eyelid)

(3) posterior displacement of the ocular prosthesis

(4) upper eyelid ptosis or retraction

(5) laxity of the lower eyelid

 

One manifestation is lagophthalmia.

 

Factors contributing to the syndrome:

(1) inadequate volume replacement

(2) orbital fat atrophy

(3) changes in superior rectus and levator muscle complex

(4) effects of gravity on the prosthesis

(5) implant migration
