Angel's trumpet is an ornamental shrub with trumpet-shaped flowers. Certain exposures can result in localized or systemic symptoms.
Plant name: Datura suaveolens, Brugmansia
Chemical compounds: tropane alkaloids with anticholinergic effects - scopolamine, hyoscyamine, atropine
Clinical presentations:
(1) local installation of plant sap into the eye ("gardener's pupil")
(2) systemic intoxication from ingestion (tea, flower petals, etc) or intentional abuse
Local instillation into the eye:
(1) unilateral midriasis with anisocoria, unresponsive to light
(2) ocular discomfort
(3) cycloplegia with blurred vision
Systemic signs:
(1) tachycardia
(2) dysarthria
(3) altered level of consciousness, confusion, agitation or anxiety
(4) amnesia
(5) salivation
(6) sweating
(7) dry mouth
