Description

Anemia and hypophosphatemia may co-exist. Sometimes it is difficult to know which came first.

Mechanism of hypophosphatemia in anemia: increased ATP formation associated with accelerated erythropoiesis

Mechanism of anemia in hypophosphatemia: hemolytic anemia secondary to membrane rigidity and ATP depletion

Anemia and hypophosphatemia can be seen in:

(1) hemolytic anemia

(2) chronic liver disease

(3) iron replacement of iron deficiency anemia

(4) diabetic ketoacidosis

(5) malnutrition with refeeding syndrome or hyperalimentation

(6) chronic renal failure with dialysis or transplant
