Description

DeBaun et al reported an anatomic classification for heterotopic ossification (HO) about the hip. Heterotopic ossification can be painful and debilitating. The authors are from Stanford University Medical Center.

Causes of heterotopic ossification about the hip may include:

(1) acetabular fracture ORIF

(2) total hip arthroplasty

(3) severe burns

(4) CNS injuries

The anatomic classification requires a CT scan of the affected hip, which can be used to generate a three-dimensional reconstruction of the deposits.

Anatomic Location

Muscles Involved

anterior

abdominal oblique muscles; iliopsoas; sartorius; tensor fasciae latae; both heads of the rectus; vastus

posterior

gluteus maximus; gluteus medius; gluteus minimus; short external rotators; hamstrings

medial

adductor compartment of the hip

The location of heterotopic calcifications can help in preoperative planning.

Surgical Approach
