Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas can be classified by anatomic location. These are the sites that should be searched on imaging studies.
Anatomic classification:
(1) pheochromocytoma of the adrenal gland
(2) extra-adrenal abdominal paraganglioma (pheochromocytoma)
(2a) urinary bladder
(2b) para-aortic
(2c) para-caval
(2d) perirenal
(2e) remnant of organs of Zuckerkandl
(2f) retroperitoneal
(2g) para-adrenal
(3) extra-adrenal thoracic paraganglioma (pheochromocytoma)
(3a) mediastinal/aorticopulmonary
(3b) cardiac/pericardial
(3c) pulmonary parenchyma
(4) head and neck paraganglioma
(4a) carotid body
(4b) vagal
(4c) jugular bulb
(4d) jugulotympanic
A patient may have multiple tumors and sometimes tumors are bilateral.
