Description

The release of fluid from an Echinococcal cyst can trigger an anaphylactic reaction in the patient, and prompt diagnosis with appropriate therapy are essential for survival. Li et al evaluated patients with Echinococcosis in the People's Republic of China.


 

Triggers for cyst leakage:

(1) trauma

(2) iatrogenic (surgery, needle stick)

(3) spontaneously

 

Patients at risk for anaphylaxis:

(1) presence of IgE-specific antibodies

(2) younger age (<= 40 years of age)

(3) pulmonary cyst(s)

 

Signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis:

(1) urticaria and/or flushing

(2) edema of lips or tongue and/or angioedema

(3) rhinorrhea and/or excessive tear formation

(4) conjunctival erythema

(5) bronchospasm, cough and/or stridor

(6) dysrhythmias

(7) seizures

(8) hypotension and shock
