Description

Lipid resuscitation therapy for acute poisoning involves infusion of intravenous lipid emulsions. The amount infused is much greater than that used for parenteral nutrition, resulting in very high levels of lipemia. A number of interferences can result.

Serum analytes that may be affected:

(1) albumin

(2) magnesium

(3) amylase

(4) lipase

(5) phosphate

(6) creatinine

(7) total protein

(8) ALT

(9) CK

(10) bilirubin

(11) glucose by colorimetry

Colorimetric assays tend to be affected while potentiometry is relatively unaffected.

Much of the interference can be removed by centrifuging the specimen at 14,000 g for 10 minutes. This results in a lipid layer that can be removed.
