Description

Amyand's hernia is a rare type of hernia that can be a challenge to diagnose, especially in a neonoate or infant.


 

Features of Amyand's hernia:

(1) right inguinal or inguino-scrotal hernia that may be tender and erythematous

(2) presence of the appendix within the hernia sac

 

The diagnosis can be made preoperatively on imaging studies (CT, US), but often the diagnosis is made at the time of an emergency operation.

 

Complications:

(1) acute appendicitis which may be ruptured

(2) incarcerated bowel

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) torsion of an undescended testis in a male

(2) acute epididymo-orchitis in a male

(3) strangulated hernia (in the case of acute appendicitis)
