Description

The Amsterdam criteria for the diagnosis of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) were first proposed in 1990 by the International Collaborative Group on HNPCC. The criteria were modified in 1998 (Amsterdam II criteria).

The Amsterdam II criteria consists of:

(1) 3 or more relatives with a cancer associated with HNPCC (see below)

(2) one of the patients is a first degree relative of the other two

(3) at least 2 successive generations are affected

(4) at least one of the cases occurred in a patient < 50 years of age

(5) familial adenomatous polyposis is excluded

(6) tumors verified by pathologic examination

In 1998 modification expanded the tumor requirement to include all HNPCC-associated tumors:

(1) colorectal carcinoma

(2) adenocarcinomas of endometrium or ovary

(3) adenocarcinoma of the stomach or small bowel

(4) adenocarcinoma of the pancreas or biliary tract

(5) transitional cell carcinoma of renal pelvis or ureter

(6) brain

(7) sebaceous tumors of the skin
