Description

A patient with a diabetic foot may have one or more amputations of the lower extremity, depending on the severity of the disease. 


Categories:

(1) distal/minor: stump allows for tibial weight-bearing

(2) proximal/major

 

Distal amputations are associated with lower morbidity and mortality.

 

Distal amputations - forefoot:

(1) toe

(2) ray (toe and metatarsal)

(3) transmetatarsal

 

Distal amputations - midfoot:

(1) Lisfranc (proximal metatarsal)

(2) Chopart (talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints)

 

Distal amputations - hindfoot:

(1) Syme

(2) Boyd

(3) Pirogoff

(4) modified Pirogoff

 

Proximal amputations:

(1) below the knee (trans-tibial)

(2) Gritti-Stokes (through the supracondylar femur with the patella used as an end cap)

(3) above the knee (transfemoral)

(4) hip disarticulation
