Description

Following resection of liver the remaining liver may regenerate. The amount of regeneration can be estimated.

Parameters:

(1) weight of liver prior to resection

(2) weight of liver removed and liver remaining

(3) difference between weight of remaining at the time of resection and follow-up

While the percent of liver removed can be estimated, it is more accurate to measure the volume of the liver prior to surgery and the volume of the removed tissue or of the remaining liver.

The density of the normal liver is 1.060. With disease (steatosis, cirrhosis, hemochromatosis) the density may change.

weight of liver prior to resection =

= (volume in mL) * 1.060

= (weight of removed liver) / ((volume of removed liver) / (preoperative liver volume))

weight of residual liver at the time of surgery =

= (volume in mL) * 1.060

= (preoperative weight of liver) - (weight of removed liver)

weight of liver that has regenerated =

= (weight of liver at followup) - (weight of residual liver at the time of surgery)
