Description

Badaluk et al listed indications for endotracheal intubation in burn patients. The goal is to reduce unnecessary intubations. The authors are from the University of Washington, University of Colorado and Mountain Area Health Education Center in Ashville.


Patient selection: adult

 

Outcome: endotracheal intubation

 

American Burn Association indications:

(1) full thickness facial burns

(2) stridor

(3) respiratory distress

(4) swelling on laryngoscopy

(5) upper airway trauma

(6) altered mentation

(7) hypoxia and/or hypercarbia

(8) hemodynamic instability

 

Denver indications are the ABA indications (all of the above) PLUS:

(9) suspected smoke inhalation

(10) singed facial hair
