Description

The American bison (Bison bison) can reach large size and they can run fast, making them potentially hazardous to humans.

Risk factors for a bison attack:

(1) getting too close (as far as possible, no less than 75 feet)

(2) male bison aggressiveness during mating season

(3) being in a vulnerable position on foot (with no place to hide)

Taking pictures of or wanting to have a picture taken with a bison is a relatively common reason to get too close.

Injuries associated with a bison attack may be the result of being:

(1) gored with a horn

(2) tossed into the air

(3) crushed

(4) trampled
