Ala et al reported the Amb score for identifying an ED patient who will likely be discharged without a prolonged hospital stay. The authors are from Royal Glamorgan Hospital in South Wales and Cardiff University.

Interpretation:

minimum score: -1

maximum score: 8

Patients discharged within 12 hours had a mean score of 7.1, while patients who had a longer admission had a mean score of 4.2.

A score >= 5 identified patients who can be managed in an ambulatory care setting.

 

Performance:

The authors report an area under the ROC curve of 0.91.

 

Modification:

Cameron et al report a modification with each item (female sex, age < 80, access to transport, no IV, not acutely confused, MEWS 0, no recent discharge) weighted 1 point, with a total score of 7 and the cutoff >= 5.
