Description

Disease of the aorta may result in permanent impairment for an individual. The AMA has developed criteria for determining the severity of this impairment.


 

Parameters:

(1) symptom severity and progression

(2) status after aortic surgery

asymptomatic during ordinary activities; mild and unlikely to progress

0 – 9%

asymptomatic during ordinary activities; may progress

asymptomatic; low risk for future aortic disease as consequence of surgery

10 – 29%

mild to moderate symptoms despite medication

mild to moderate symptoms; or at risk for recurrence of aortic disease

30 – 49%

moderate to severe symptoms despite medication; interferes with activities of daily living

moderate to severe symptoms; or high risk of recurrence of aortic disease

50 – 100%
