AMA Criteria for Impairment Associated with Station and Gait Disorders

The level of impairment associated with a disorder affecting station or gait can be estimated based on the AMA criteria.

Parameters:

(1) ability to rise and stand

(2) ability to walk

Ability to Rise and Stand	Ability to Walk	Percent Whole Person Impairment
normal	normal	0%
normal	walks but has difficulty with elevations, grades, stairs, or long distances	1 - 9%
with mild difficulty	walks some distance with difficulty but without assistance; limited to walking on level surfaces	10 – 19%
with moderate difficulty	cannot walk without assistance	20 – 39%
cannot stand without help, mechanical support and/or an assistive device	severely impaired	40 – 60%
