Description

A disorder of the olfactory nerve (Cranial Nerve I) can result in an alteration or loss in the sense of smell and the ability to recognize odors. This can also interfere with the sense of taste. The degree of impairment depends on how much the activities of daily living are affected.


 

Causes for a disorder of the olfactory nerve:

(1) traumatic

(2) stroke

(3) complication of CNS infection

 

Types of dysfunction:

(1) dysosmia (impaired sense of smell)

(2) anosmia, partial or complete

(3) parosmia (perversion of the sense of smell)
