Description

Schroeck et al evaluated men following therapy for prostate cancer. They developed a definition for potency based on elements from 2 instruments. The authors are from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.


 

Instruments evaluated:

(1) International Index of Erectile Function Short Version (IIEF-5)

(2) Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC)

 

Criteria for male potency - all of the following:

(1) The patient's penis is hard enough for vaginal penetration most of the time or always.

(2) The man's penis remains firm enough for intercourse.

(3) The patient can achieve an erection whenever he wants one.

(4) The patient has had sexual intercourse during the past 4 weeks.

(5) The patient rates his sexual function as good or very good.

• Having sex in the past 4 weeks may be subject to a number of circumstances unrelated to potency.
