Description

Eating cicadas can result in an allergic reaction.


Risk factor:

(1) allergy to shellfish (both cicadas and shellfish belong to phylum Arthropoda)

 

Symptoms may include:

(1) urticaria

(2) itching or tightness in the throat

(3) dyspnea

(4) wheezing

(5) stomach cramps

(6) cough

(7) swelling of the lips or tongue

(8) dizziness or confusion

 

Other causes of allergy should be excluded.

 

The allergic reaction should respond to allergy medications, including epinephrine for a severe reaction.
