Description

The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) used a simple screen to detect sarcopenia in an older adult.

Patient selection: age > 65 years

Indications to measure muscle mass - one or both of the following:

(1) gait speed <= 0.8 meters per second

(2) grip strength low (< 30 kg for male, < 20 kg for female)

If the muscle mass is low, then the patient has sarcopenia.

If the gait speed is > 0.8 m/s and grip strength normal then there is no need to measure muscle mass.
