Olivera and Chaverra reported an algorithm for the diagnosis of Chagas disease. This is intended to be inexpensive for the patient. The authors are from Instituto Nacional de Salud and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Columbia.
Patient selection - one or of the following:
(1) lives in or comes from a region endemic for Chagas disease
(2) has a close relative with Chagas disease
(3) clinical suspicion of Chagas disease
Disease is made by one of the following tests for T. cruzi:
(1) ELISA for IgG, total extract, sensitivity >= 98%
(2) ELISA for IgG, synthetic peptides or recombinant proteins, sensitivity > 98%
(3) IFA
