Description

Follin et al reported a tree-based algorithm for prehospital triage of a patient with polytrauma. The authors are from Universite Paris 5 Descartes, University of California San Francisco, Universite Paris Diderot, Universite de Versailles St Quentin and the University of California Berkeley.

Patient selection: polytrauma

Outcome: percent of patients who need to be referred to a trauma center

Parameters:

(1) need for mechanical ventilation

(2) spinal cord injury

(3) mechanism of trauma (penetrating, fall, blunt)

(4) hemoglobin in g/dL

(5) heart rate in beats per minute

(6) sex

(7) age in years

(8) type of crash (pedestrian, car, motorcycle)

(9) systolic blood pressure in mm Hg

(10) percent oxygen saturation

where:

• The original spinal cord determination was for fall and penetrating injury. Added blunt as well.

• The type of crash listed is pedestrian, car and motor cycle. None is not an option in the original table.
