Description

Patients with significant mitral valve prolapse require antibiotic prophylaxis following certain dental or surgical procedures to prevent bacterial endocarditis.

Algorithm for Management

If mitral valve prolapse is suspected, and if ausculation discloses the murmur of mitral regurgitation, or if previous records indicate mitral valve prolapse disease, then prophylaxis is given.

If no information is available and the procedure needs to be done immediately, then prophylaxis is given.

If the procedure can be delayed pending cardiographic evaluation, and if there is a murmur of mitral regurgitation or evidence on Doppler-echocardiography of mitral valve prolapse, then prophylaxis is given.

If no evidence of regurgitation or significant mitral valve prolapse is found on a complete cardiologic evaluation, then prophylaxis is not given.
