Wetterling et al developed the Alcohol Withdrawal Scale (AWS) to evaluate a patient undergoing alcohol withdrawal. This can help to quantitate the severity of the withdrawal syndrome and guide management. The authors are from the University Medical School of Lubeck and Psychiatric Hospital Heiligenhafen in Germany.
Subscales:
(1) somatic symptoms (S)
(2) mental symptoms (M)
Parameters for somatic symptoms:
(1) pulse rate in beats per minute
(2) diastolic blood pressure in mm Hg
(3) body temperature in °C
(4) breathing rate in breaths per minute
(5) sweating
(6) tremor
Parameters for mental symptoms:
(1) agitation
(2) contact
(3) orientation (time, person, place, situation)
(4) hallucinations (optical, acoustic, tactile)
(5) anxiety

Interpretation:
• minimum somatic, mental and total score: 0
• maximum subscore for somatic symptoms: 17
• maximum subscore for mental symptoms: 16
• maximum subscore for total symptoms: 33
• The higher the score the greater the severity of the withdrawal.
