An increase in the urinary excretion of albumin is seen in diabetic nephropathy. One measure of this is the albumin excretion rate (AER).
Parameters:
(1) urine albumin concentration in mg/dL
(2) volume of urine in mL
(3) duration of specimen collection, up to 24 hours
duration of specimen collection in minutes =
= (collection period in hours) * 60
urine albumin excretion in µg =
= (urine albumin concentration in mg/dL) * (urine volume in mL) / 100 * 1000
albumin excretion rate in µg/min =
= (urine albumin excretion in µg) / (duration of collection period in minutes)
Albumin Excretion Rate (AER)
Interpretation
> 5 µg/min
early elevation of AER
>= 20 and < 200 µg/min in 2 or 3 of 3 timed specimens
microalbuminuria
>= 200 µg/min
albuminuria
