Acute aflatoxicosis refers to an acute hepatitis developing after an acute exposure to a high concentration of aflatoxins.
Clinical and laboratory features:
(1) anorexia
(2) malaise
(3) low-grade fever
(4) vomiting
(5) abdominal pain
(6) jaundice
(7) diarrhea
(8) abnormal liver function tests
(9) abnormal mental status
Subsequent courses include
(1) Reye's syndrome
(2) fulminant deterioration in liver function (fulminant hepatitis)
The mortality may reach 25% or more.
