Description

Inhalation of volcanic ash can pose a number of risks to man and animal.

Risks of inhaling volcanic ash:

(1) hot ash can burn the airways

(2) acidic gases in the ash can cause chemical burns along the airway

(3) toxic gases can be absorbed and cause systemic toxicity

(4) silica and other minerals can cause silicosis later in life

The smaller the ash particles the more likely that they will be inhaled deep into the lung.

Conditions that place a person at increased risk from inhaling volcanic ash:

(1) asthma

(2) COPD (chronic bronchitis, emphysema)

(3) bronchiectasis

(4) acute or chronic lung infection

(5) cystic fibrosis

(6) pre-existing silicosis

Protection from ash may include:

(1) leaving the affected area if possible

(2) wearing a face mask with goggles (may be problem with impaired lung function)

(3) staying inside with doors and windows closed (roof collapse may be a risk)
