Excess intake of choline is uncommon. It can occur if a person takes excessive dietary supplements of choline or if there is a calculation error when preparing a TPN solution.
If 7.5 gram or more of choline are ingested per day, then patients may have:
(1) hypotension
(2) nausea
(3) diarrhea
(4) a fishy body odor
(5) possibly an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but this would require long-term intake
The tolerable upper intake level (UL) set by the US Institute of Medicine in 1998 was 3.5 g per day.
