Patient selection: excessive dose of an over-the-counter weight loss product containing caffeine or other methylxanthine
Other sources of caffeine or methylxanthine may contribute to the total body load.
Clinical findings in acute toxicity:
(1) nausea and vomiting
(2) tachycardia
(3) opisthotonos
(4) myoclonic jerks
(5) seizures
(6) cerebral edema
(7) ventricular arrhythmias
(8) exertional rhabdomyolysis
Laboratory findings may include:
(1) hypokalemia
(2) hypocalcemia
(3) hyperglycemia
The methylxanthine may be only one of the components in the formulation. These other compounds (salicylate, ephredra, phenylpropanolamine, other) can also contribute to the toxic effects.
