Description

Adverse effects from excessive intake of biotin is rare, as biotin is usually well tolerated. It is water soluble, and any excess intake is usually quickly excreted.


Sources of excessive biotin intake:

(1) calculation error for total parenteral nutrition or other supplement

(2) obsessive intake

 

Adverse effects reported with excessive intake:

(1) skin rash

(2) nausea, diarrhea or cramping

(3) urination with increased thirst

 

Problems associated with biotin intake unrelated to excessive dose are more common:

(1) allergic reactions

(2) interference with immunoassays (biotin-streptavidin based)

 

Laboratory tests that may be affected: thyroid, vitamin D, troponin, HIV, HCG, viral hepatitis
