Toxic compounds: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
People at workers: asphalt production workers, asphalt paving workers
Exposures: inhalation of fumes, dermal contact
Respiratory findings:
(1) cough
(2) wheezing
(3) reduced respiratory function
Cancers associated with asphalt exposure:
(1) lung cancer
(2) urinary bladder cancer
Risk factors:
(1) heavy and repeated exposures
(2) lack of personal protective equipment and clothing
(3) smoking
(4) higher temperature of the hot mix
Additional toxic exposure occurs if diesel fuel is used for cleaning. This can be reduced by using biodiesel (Cavallari et al).
