There are several indices based on adult mosquitoes that can be used for mosquito vector surveillance. An increase in an index is associated with an increase in mosquitoes and an increased risk of mosquito-borne disease.
Methods for evaluating adult mosquitoes:
(1) number caught within a trap over a specific period of time
(2) number of mosquitoes landing and biting an adult subject (the bait") in a period of time
number of adults in a trap per hour =
= (number of adults captured in time period) / (number of hours trap in operation)
number landing and biting =
= (number of adults that land and bite in a time period) / (number of hours observed)
Mosquitoes collected can be submitted for analysis of pathogens.
As the number of infected moquitoes increase the risk of infection increases.
Sources of variability:
(1) skin surface area exposed
(2) accuracy in counting
