Description

Rarely a patient may present with adrenal insufficiency following a vaccination.

The adrenal insufficiency may be gradual, or it may present as an acute adrenal crisis.

Occurrence:

(1) COVID-19 vaccines

(2) tetanus

(3) polio

(4) pertussis

One subset of patients have pre-existing panhypopituitarism and/or adrenal insufficiency.

Another subset has the onset of hypopituitarism and/or adrenal insufficiency after the vaccination. These may result from acute hemorrhage that is a consequence of thrombotic thrombocytopenia.

If a patient with pre-existing subacute adrenal insufficiency develops an acute infection or metabolic stress and if the patient develops severe signs and symptoms, then the stress could precipitate adrenal insufficiency.
