Oxipurinol is a major metabolite of allopurinol and is excreted by the kidneys. The dose of allopurinol needs to be adjusted for changes in renal function.
If the person is receiving routine hemodialysis (sessions 2 to 3 times per week) then the allopurinol dose is 300 mg soon after each dialysis session. If other forms or schedules of dialysis are given then it may be necessary to consult with a hospital pharmacists on the optimum dosage schedule.
