Adipocere is a substance that is formed by the decomposition of adipose tissue under certain conditions which inhibit bacterial proliferation.
Synonym: corpse wax
Appearance:
(1) greyish white
(2) waxy or soapy crumbly material
It results from the formation of polyhydroxy fatty acids by bacteria.
Conditions of formation:
(1) moist environment
(2) lack of oxygen
(3) surplus organic compounds
Once formed it can last for centuries provided the storage conditions do not change. If exposed to oxygen then bacteria can eventually degrade it.
