Description

Adenovirus is a common cause of viral conjunctivitis. It is contagious and can occur in epidemics. The virus can be spread by fomites.


Clinical features:

(1) conjunctival hyperemia with or without petechial hemorrhages

(2) watery discharge

(3) chemosis

(4) edema of the eyelids

(5) fever

(6) pharyngitis or upper respiratory tract infection

(7) may be associated with ocular pain or photophobia

(8) preauricular lymphadenopathy

 

Patterns:

(1) follicular conjunctivitis

(2) pharyngoconjunctival fever (serotypes 3, 4, 7)

(3) epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (serotypes 8, 19, 37)

(4) acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (serotype 11)
