Description

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas is an uncommon tumor that can have a poor prognosis.


 

Features of an adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas:

(1) The tumor tends to occur in males > 60 years of age.

(2) The tumor shows features of both adenocarciinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The tumor will show areas of positive immunostaining for CK5/6 and p63.

(3) Central necrosis may be seen on imaging studies.

 

The tumors often show mutations in K-ras.

 

Poor prognostic factors:

(1) metastatic disease

(2) inability to completely resect at the time of initial surgery

(3) failure to treat aggressively
